What is an OSHC Direct Billing provider?

An ahm OSHC direct billing provider has an agreement with ahm to send the bill directly to us. This is to help reduce or eliminate the upfront payment you would normally be required to make at the time of your appointment.

OSHC what a gap fees (co-payments)?

The Gap Fees are fees charged by your health professional above what your OSHC covers. To minimize the gap fees, please use our OSHC Direct Billing – Find a Provider page.

 

How do I make a claim?

Does OSHC pay benefits towards the cost of STI testing and treatment?

ahm OSHC will pay up to 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Fee for GP consultations and up to 85% of the MBS Fee for specialist consultations towards the cost of STI tests billed with an MBS item number.

 

How much will an STI test cost me?

It depends on how the testing occurs and how you are charged. If you are taking an STI test, you can call ahm on 134 148 to ask for more information about your specific situation and how your OSHC might contribute.

 

How much will treatment for an STI cost me?

It depends on what treatment you are given, where the treatment occurs and how the doctors charge you. If you are diagnosed with an STI, you can call ahm on 134 148 to ask for more information about your specific situation and how your OSHC might contribute.

 

How much will PrEP and PEP cost me?

It depends on what medication you are taking, and how are charged. If you are thinking about taking PrEP or PEP, you can call ahm on 134 148 to ask for more information about your specific situation and how your OSHC might contribute.

 

How much will HIV testing cost me?

It depends on how the testing occurs and how you are charged. If you are taking a HIV test, you can call ahm on 134 148 to ask for more information about your specific situation and how your OSHC might contribute.

 

How much will HIV treatment cost me?

It depends on what treatment you are given, where the treatment occurs and how the doctors charge you. If you are diagnosed with HIV, you can call ahm on 134 148 to ask for more information about your specific situation and how your OSHC might contribute.

 

Will my parents know what I have used my OSHC for?

ahm will only communicate your personal information with you and anyone you allow us to. All personal information is handled in accordance with the OSHC privacy policy and that in terms of information about their policy to others, we will communicate where we have been authorised to do so (Authority Form) If you have purchased your OSHC using your parents or an agent’s contact details (e.g. an email address), it is important that you update your contact details in the ahm OSHC App or the Online Member Services portal. We will contact you through the contact details you provide us.

 

Does OSHC pay benefits towards the cost of cervical & breast screening?

How much will cervical and breast screening cost me? It depends on where you have conducted your screening and how the doctors bill to ahm. In general –

  • If you are admitted to hospital, ahm OSHC will pay 100% of the MBS Fee towards the cost of cervical & breast screening if billed with an MBS item number
  • If you are not admitted to hospital, ahm OSHC will pay 85% of the MBS Fee towards the cost of cervical & breast screening if billed with an MBS item number

 

Does my health insurance pay benefits towards contraception?

Generally, no. ahm OSHC will not contribute towards non-prescribed contraception. In limited circumstances, you may be prescribed a form of contraception by a doctor that is listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). You can call us on 134 148 to ask for more information.

 

Does OSHC pay benefits towards the cost of pregnancy care? How much will it cost me?

Yes. ahm OSHC pays towards Pregnancy & Birth up to –

  • 100% of the MBS Fee for In-Hospital Medical Services billed with an MBS number
  • 85% of the MBS Fee for Out-Patient (& Specialist) Medical Services billed with an MBS number
  • Benefits for Eligible Prescription Medicines

You may have to serve a 12 month waiting period before being eligible for these benefits.

If the doctor charges more than the ahm OSHC benefit, you will have an out-of-pocket equal to the difference between the charge and ahm’s benefit.

 

Does OSHC pay benefits towards the cost of an abortion? How much will it cost me?

Yes. ahm OSHC pays towards Miscarriage and Termination of Pregnancy up to –

  • 100% of the MBS Fee for In-Hospital Medical Services billed with an MBS number
  • 85% of the MBS Fee for Out-Patient (& Specialist) Medical Services billed with an MBS number
  • Benefits for Eligible Prescription Medicines

If the doctor charges more than the ahm OSHC benefit, you will have an out-of-pocket equal to the difference between the charge and ahm’s benefit after waiting period is served.

 

Does OSHC cover the cost of interpreters?

No, ahm OSHC does not cover the cost of interpreters for all services. However, members can call ahm’s 24/7 Student Health & Support line 1800 887 283 and access free translator services (around 160 languages supported) over the phone whilst talking to health professionals on any health questions or concerns. Who can see details of my OSHC claims?

ahm handles all personal information in accordance with ahm’s privacy policy. We will not share your claims history unless you authorise us to do so.

 

How much gap do you need to pay for prescriptions (i.e. medicines)?

With ahm OSHC, you will be required to pay a contribution towards the cost of each eligible medicine item before we pay any benefits. The maximum amount we will pay per item is $50 with annual limits ($300 for single, $100 for Couple/Family policies)

Do you have to pay upfront for sexual and reproductive health care even if you have OSHC?

If you attend an ahm OSHC SHC direct billing provider, they will send the bill directly to ahm. Depending on the Doctor you see, you may on occasion experience an ‘out-of-pocket’ expense if they bill above the ahm benefit. With other providers, you will need to pay upfront and then make a claim (whether online, in store, by post or via ahm OSHC App).
