How is HIV transmitted?
HIV can be passed on through certain body fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk.
HIV can be transmitted:
- Through sex without a condom or without taking PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). PrEP is a medication that helps prevent HIV in people at risk of getting it
- During pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.
- Through sharing needles or other tattoo, piercing or injecting equipment.
HIV is not spread through everyday contact. You cannot get HIV from kissing, hugging, holding hands, sharing food or drinks, using the same toilet, coughing, sneezing or spitting.
